Hidden fees & dishonest guarantees: OTAs vs. direct booking

Online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com claim to offer travelers the best deals, but the truth is often more complicated. Rate parity, the principle that hotels should keep pricing consistent across all booking channels, was meant to ensure fairness. However, OTAs often manipulate pricing structures, making their listings appear cheaper only to tack on hidden fees later. This practice misleads consumers and undermines the value of direct booking. How OTAs Use Hidden Fees to Distort Pricing OTAs frequently advertise lower prices upfront, but then add service fees, resort fees, and other charges at checkout. For example, a room that starts at $150 per night can easily climb to $180 or more once these fees are revealed. Although OTAs are legally required to disclose these costs, they typically do so later in the process, increasing the likelihood that consumers will book out of convenience. This deceptive pricing model not only creates confusion but also erodes consumer trust in hotel pricing.

Why Transparency in Pricing Matters

Recent regulations now require hotels to display all mandatory fees upfront, which helps improve price clarity for consumers. However, OTAs continue to hide these fees until the final stages of booking. By prioritizing transparency in their pricing, hotels can rebuild consumer trust, offer clearer comparisons, and showcase the true value of booking directly. Transparency leads to loyalty, trust, and ultimately more direct revenue.

The Advantages of Direct Booking for Hotels

Direct bookings benefit both hotels and travelers. Hotels can offer loyalty rewards, exclusive perks, and superior customer service to direct bookers, advantages of OTAs simply can't match. Additionally reducing reliance on OTAs, hotels can avoid hefty commission fees, which can range from 15 to 30 percent per booking. With more bookings coming directly to them, hotels keep more revenue, invest in better guest experiences, and foster long-term customer relationships.

Reclaiming Control Over Your Distribution Strategy

Hotels don't have to remain at the mercy of OTA pricing tactics. Strengthening direct booking strategies through transparent pricing, loyalty programs, and enhanced guest experiences can help hotels reclaim control over distribution and profitability. It's the perfect time for hotels to educate guests on the true costs of OTA bookings and highlight the benefits of booking directly. The more hotels take control of their pricing narrative, the less influence OTAs will have over the traveler's booking journey.
